Conclusion
Hello!
Excluding the references used whilst writing this blog, this will be my final post! What a journey it has been. I have learnt and experimented with many different techniques outside of what I would usually do (such as reamping the drums, for example), but I am so glad I did. I feel like a new person... so much more educated and riveting to see what else I can experiment with and uncover in the future when recording in the studio - and elsewhere!
Overall, I am veryyyy happy with the outcome of my track. I do want to go over a couple of things I did, though, as I forgot to mention some things!
First of all - the vocals. I decided to keep the original vocals as they reminded me of Beth Gibbons' vocals in "Glory Box". All I did to them was chop up and flex-time the lines to make them fit with the metronome and beat of my song (as my bpm is 119, whereas the original is 120 bpm). I changed my bpm to 119bpm to match with "Glory Box"'s. I then compressed them to make them sound more vintage-y, added reverb through Space Designer in Logic Pro, and a 1/4 alternating delay pattern to give them a more atmospheric and dreamy feel, whilst also keeping them quite raw.
I added a string section, based on the bass line, to give the song more body and dramaticism, and kept some of the original tracks (such as the "Upright Noise Reamp) and the "Vibes Bow 1" to add texture and keep osme of the original track, cas it is meant to be a remake, after all!
To organise my track, I colour-coded the different elements and, since there were so many different takes of the recorded elements, I added the word "Final" before the name of the instrumentation so as to not get confused about what was unused and used. Here is a photo of the layout of my track:
If I were to do this again from the start, I would definitely do the drums slightly different (as explained in the "Recording Drums and Reflection" post) and potentially record my own vocals to fit better with the style of Gibbon's.
Well... thank you for following me on this journey. I hope you enjoyed reading about it as much as I enjoyed recording and producing it!
See you later!
-D.
