Recording Bass and Reflection

 Hello!

Today I recorded the bass for my track!

To record, I used the e602, placed off-axis around 3 inches from the edge of the cone. I also used a DI box and a room mic (the AT2020). The room mic was placed around 65" from the edge of the cone(s) to capture a lot of the room. As for the bass amp setup, I didn't boost the overdrive as I didn't want it to be too heavily distorted, however, I did have the gain increased slightly. On the EQ, the bass was turned down to mid-low, whilst the mids were the highest. The horn was switched off too.

Below are photos from the session:

As for post-production, I had a slower, much, much simpler bass line run throughout the fading intro to the song, before transitioning into the faster bass line that continues throughout the song to build tension and rhythm. I added some slight, soft distortion, EQ'd the bass and mids to be slightly higher and past 5300Hz to fade out. I also compressed the bass using the "Jazz Bass" preset in Logic, before slightly changing some aspects of it to better fit to my bass. However, I felt this was fitting to my track and how I wanted the bass to sound as it didn't take out all of the body - in fact, it made the bass so was more felt than heard.

That's all this time - a successful turn out!

-D.
